Saturday 4 July 2026, 10am-4pm
Develop your painting practice through a focused introduction to oil painting, using native bird subjects as a point of study. Led by artist Jo Shepherd and set within the biodiverse grounds of Matt Black Barn, this workshop combines technical instruction with close observation of the natural world.
The session begins with a concise introduction to core oil painting techniques, including colour mixing, brush handling, and paint application. You will then apply these principles in the development of a small-scale painting of a familiar native bird, building confidence and control through sustained observation.
All materials are provided.
What to expect:
A clear, practical introduction to oil painting
Step-by-step guidance in developing a resolved bird study
Emphasis on colour, form, and painterly handling
A structured and supportive learning environment
Who it’s for:
Open to all levels, including complete beginners.
Set within a landscape shaped by biodiversity and ecological processes, the workshop reflects how nature-led systems can restore ecological richness, support habitat diversity, and deepen engagement with the natural world as a subject for artistic study.
