Futures in the Making

Matt Black Barn is a Community Interest Company (CIC) supported by Arts Council England, with a core mission to support wellbeing, learning, and access to the arts. We provide opportunities for young people to develop creative skills and build meaningful relationships with contemporary art. Through our Futures in the Making programme, we offer free, interactive visits to schools, colleges, and universities—designed to nurture creativity and support educators in engaging confidently with contemporary art practices. We are committed to inclusion, offering free visits to individuals and groups who face barriers to accessing the arts, including adults with additional needs, older persons groups, and young carers. Where travel or other practical challenges exist, we can provide assistance to ensure hands-on, inspiring experiences are accessible to all.

  • VISITS

    Matt Black Barn offers interactive visits to schools, colleges and universities as well as to groups of all ages and perspectives.  Visitors will be shown around the studios where sculptures will be being made in a wide variety of processes, both traditional and experimental.  Visitors will see the full range of procedures that contribute to the professional activity of being an artist from conception through realisation, storage, distribution and installation. There will be the opportunity to meet with the artists and discuss with them issues ranging from creativity and making artwork through to economics, networking and studio management as well as all matters practical.

  • SCHOOL VISITS

    Matt Black Barn is much more than a workspace; it is a living gallery and creative hub where artistic ideas come to life. The barn's blend of rustic charm and contemporary vision provides a setting that stimulates curiosity and encourages dialogue about art, culture, and the creative process.

    Participate in tailored drawing or sculpture workshops that encourage students to apply what they've learned.

  • COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY VISITS

    Unlike traditional museum visits, Matt Black Barn offers an interactive experience where students can engage directly with artworks and participate in creative workshops. This hands-on approach enriches learning and connects theoretical knowledge with practical application.

    We welcome groups of individuals with diverse support needs offering the chance to engage in, fulfilling creative experiences. We provide a welcoming, inclusive space where we hope everyone feels comfortable to express their creativity in their own unique way.
